From 2030:
Carbon emissions cut
by 4.9 million t/year
Together we can do it.
With Pure Steel+
By 2045:
Climate-neutral
Together we can do it.
With Pure Steel+
We have a plan for
our transformation.
To achieve it, we need support
from the state and federal
government and from the EU.

Simply pure:
Pure Steel+

„Pure” stands for the high quality of our steel, which is already helping advance the energy and mobility transition. “Pure” also stands for the dedication and efforts of our employees, whose strong commitment is making the transformation process possible, and for their pride in being part of this important project. We are marking our carbon-reduced steel with the plus sign. To ensure that our customers around the world can immediately recognize the added value of our steel innovations, we are affixing it directly to our products.

2020
Hydrogen is used for the first time in Germany – not just in a test plant but on an industrial scale in steel production – in Dillingen, in the blast furnaces of ROGESA Roheisengesellschaft Saar mbH (a joint subsidiary of Saarstahl AG and AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke).

2022
The Supervisory Boards of SHS – Stahl-Holding-Saar, Saarstahl AG and Aktien-Gesellschaft der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger), the Board of Trustees of Montan-Stiftung-Saar and the Board of Management of SHS – Stahl-Holding-Saar decide to invest around EUR 3.5 billion for climate-neutral steel production by 2045 in the sites in Saarland – subject to public funding.

2023
Planned start of construction of a direct reduced iron (DRI) plant and an electric arc furnace (EAF) in Dillingen as well as an EAF in Völklingen.

2027
Planned startup of the DRI plant with a 2.5-million-ton capacity in Dillingen. Planned startup of two electric arc furnaces (EAFs) in Dillingen and Völklingen for approx. 3.5 million tons of crude steel per year.

2028
Production of climate-friendly „green” steel from Dillingen and Völklingen is to begin, with 3.5 million tons of crude steel per year in the first phase.

2030
We aim to achieve a 55 percent reduction of carbon emissions. That’s 4.9 million metric tons less carbon emitted annually. Dismantling of one blast furnace

By 2045:
Planned construction and commissioning of a third EAF.
From 2045:
Climate-neutral production of around 4.9 million tons of green steel.

Environmental Product Declaration published for “Pure Steel+ Rail” products

Saarstahl Rail, a subsidiary of Saarstahl AG, published in August the first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its “Pure Steel+ Rail” products. The EPD, which contains information about the environmental impact of a product, affirms Saarstahl Rail’s pioneering role in the mobility sector.

We are drivers of the energy transition

The world’s largest offshore wind farm to date, „Hornsea 2” in the UK, Denmark’s largest offshore facility, „Kriegers Flak”, „Borssele III and IV” off the Dutch coast: Dillinger’s special plate is in demand for offshore wind energy projects worldwide.

We are building bridges to the future

Dillinger is a leading international manufacturer of heavy plate for the construction of offshore wind turbines, machinery and steel construction. Saarstahl is a world leader in the manufacture of wire rod and bar steel for the automotive industry, the construction industry and for general machine manufacturing.

We are drivers of the transport transition

The first low-carbon metro line 16 in Paris („bas carbone”) is being built with carbon-neutral steel from Saarstahl Rail. The high-speed railway lines in France and worldwide run on rails from Saarstahl Rail, as do the most important European railroad networks.
